Already in 1883, the ranger Ullrich in Braunlage made the first "ski" based on the Norwegian model.  He needed to get better through the deep snow when maintaining the woods during the hard winter season. Only nine years later the first registered Wintersport Association in Germany was founded here in Braunlage.
